Our verdict

HSBC is an enormous brand. The quality of its private banking service is a separate question, and a less flattering one.

In AES's experience, private banking clients at HSBC are assigned salespeople titled relationship managers, who are too often neither qualified nor positioned to provide the level of care, judgement and solutions that serious wealth deserves. The title suggests advice; the incentives point towards selling the bank's own products.

The deeper issue is structural. A bank sells what a bank holds. Serious wealth work begins one level up, with the whole picture coordinated across your investments, structures, pensions, protection and succession, and with advice that answers to you rather than to a product shelf.

If you are already a private banking client of HSBC, a no-obligation Second Opinion will show whether your portfolio still serves your plan, or whether the plan was ever the starting point. AES will also review the thinking that led to the investments you currently hold.
